“Query Builder” hangs when creating a “BI Server” report

Q: I’m trying to create a report based on a BI Server subject area.  When I click in Query Builder I get a “waiting for” message and a blank screen?

How shall I put it: an occasional and unexplained “glitch in the OBIEE Matrix!”  Exit BI Publisher.  First confirm that the BI Server is responding to requests by using the “ODBC Client” test client (Start => All Programs => Oracle Business Intelligence => ODBC Client).  Select “File => Open DataBase” from the menu.  Select a value for “DSN” of “AnalyticsWeb” and use the same account information that you’re using for BI Publisher to populate the “UID” and “Password” fields.  Select “Utility => Enter SQL Query” from the menu, enter a simple SQL statement for one of the tables involved in your report query in the pop-up and press “Execute”.  If you see the rows you’re expecting then the BI Server is working.  Log back into BI Publisher and try to create the query again – you’ll usually find that the problem has disappeared.

“Load Report Parameters Error” when uploading template

Q: I’m trying to publish a template from Word to BI Publisher, but I get the message “Load Report Parameters Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object”?

BI Publisher can be a little “flaky” at times.  Do the following and it will usually clear the bug.  Log out of BI Publisher – “Oracle BI Publisher => Log Off”.  Save the template to disk, and close down MS Word.  Open MS Word again.  Open the template that you’ve just saved.  Log on to BI Publisher – “Oracle BI Publisher => Log On”.  Select “BI Publisher” as the “Workspace”.  Navigate to and select the report on which the template is based.  Press the “Open Report” button.  Then try to publish/upload the template as before.

“Run-time error 4248” error when exiting MS Word

Q: When I exit Word I get a “Run-time error ‘4248’ This command is not available because no document is open” error?

This “Visual Basic” error occurs if you are still logged on to BI Publisher when you exit MS Word.  Log off from BI Publisher first and the error won’t appear.  However, you won’t do any harm if you forget to do so.
